We Love the Markets
Browse, Buy, Socialise and Eat

Local markets are the heart and soul of most towns in France, lining the town’s streets with seasonal produce.

Our nearest town, Sainte-Foy La Grande, holds a weekly market every Saturday morning. It starts early and the vendors start to pack away as the church bells strike noon. This market is one of the largest in the area and was voted Best in France in 2015. The main square is surrounded by cafés. It’s a great place to take breakfast or lunch, or simply a break from shopping to enjoy the exceptional atmosphere and buzz.

On Sunday mornings in Bordeaux, the Chartons market takes place along the riverfront. Fabulous to enjoy it like a local with a glass of Bordeaux Blanc and a dozen fresh local oysters. The market ends at noon which leaves you time for lunch and afternoon sightseeing.

You’ll find some examples, with distance from Claribès, listed below. A comprehensive list is available in the holiday house information book.

  • Castillon-la-Bataille: market Monday (15km)
  • Sauveterre-de-Guyenne: market Tuesday (25km)
  • Cadillac: market Saturday (48km)
  • Sainte Foy La Grande: market Saturday (12km)
  • Duras: market Monday (18km)
  • Bordeaux Quai Louis XVIII: market Sunday (60km)

Night Markets

Night markets are a summer feature in many towns. Taking advantage of the warm evenings they are an opportunity to eat, drink, enjoy music and dance with friends and neighbours. Local food trucks, restaurants, wine and beer producers setup their stands for the evening. Meet-up with friends and meet new people at the long tables provided.

Brocante – Vide-grenier

Brocantes and Vide-grenier are places to find second-hand household items.

Brocantes are generally a mixture of professional and amateur traders of antique and vintage goods. There are many Brocante on permanent sites in the area. Some open daily, others, weekly.

In Gensac we have an annual Brocante that winds its way throughout the village.

Vide-greniers are usually in rural towns and villages with local amateur sellers.
